Undergraduate

Bachelor’s Degree in Animal Science:

  • Animal Science – Science Option
    Students who plan to attend veterinary, medical, pharmacy or graduate school are encouraged to selected the science option. In addition to the core courses in animal science, this option includes approximately six hours of chemistry and heavily emphasizes other areas such as biology, genetics, physics, physiology and mathematics.
  • Animal Science – Animal Production/Industry Option
    Students seeking careers in animal production, agricultural extension work or feed sales usually select the animal production/industry option. It includes courses in allied areas such as agronomy, range science, accounting, agricultural economics and management. In addition, students with an interest in a specific species are encouraged to direct their general elective hours toward those courses offered in the Department of Animal Science.

This 22-credit program offers students the opportunity to gain recognition on their transcript by completing coursework focusing on a core set of equine skills. Courses includes equine care, production and management, evaluation, behavior, and health and nutrition. Certificate students are also required to participate in an internship or research project.

Bachelor’s Degree in Biomedical Sciences
The College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences (CVM) offers an undergraduate degree in biomedical sciences, which focuses on the broad field of applied biology related to health and disease. This program serves as an excellence track for students pursuing veterinary school, or those wishing to study equine sciences in greater depth in a graduate program.

Advanced Degrees in Animal Science, Physiology of Reproduction and Animal Breeding
Advanced study in animal science offers preparation for a future in teaching, research, Extension, livestock production, equine industry management and in industries involving food technology, livestock products and livestock management. Majors and degrees include master of science, master of agriculture and doctorate in animal science, master of science and doctorate in physiology of reproduction and master of science and doctorate in animal breeding.

Master of Equine Industry Management
This program is designed to prepare graduates for a variety of careers in the equine industry, and to graduate the future leaders of the equine industry. The objective of this program is to provide students with a core set of skills considered to be vital in the equine industry, and then guide students in customizing the supporting internships based on specific career path interests. The curriculum focuses on developing skill sets in equine sciences, marketing, management, public affairs, communication and leadership.

The CVM delivers graduate education through a range of MS degrees that can have a Thesis Option (TO) or Non-Thesis Option (NTO) and PhD degrees which enable students to gain or enhance basic and applied research experience. Graduate education advances original research and knowledge to promote the health of animals and humans. Students can pursue a graduate degree focusing on a variety of research disciplines, include equine-related topics such as equine genetics or equine infectious disease.

Each of the five departments within the College award an MS or PhD in Biomedical Sciences (BIMS), and there are additional departmental and interdisciplinary programs of study to fit a variety of interests. You can view a list of these programs of study at the Degrees Offered link.

Graduates excel in careers that include academia, the pharmaceutical industry, state and federal research institutions, and private industry.

Professional

ultrasoundThe flagship curricular offering of the CVM is the professional program in veterinary medicine. Texas A&M is home to the only veterinary medicine program in the state of Texas.

As a part of the doctor of veterinary medicine (DVM) curriculum, the CVM offers courses in equine medicine. Additionally, fourth year DVM students have the opportunity to rotate through the following clinical services as part of their training:

  • Equine Community Practice
  • Equine Field Service
  • Equine Internal Medicine
  • Equine Lameness
  • Equine Medicine and Surgery (two rotations)
  • Equine Orthopedics
  • Equine Soft Tissue Surgery
  • Equine Theriogenology

DVM graduates can further their education with internships and residencies in theriogenology, equine medicine, surgery and radiology, among others.
