New genes, a<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-530 alignleft\" style=\"font-weight: normal; text-align: center;\" src=\"https:\/\/agrilife.org\/casolalab\/files\/2018\/07\/Figure_3_hr-copy-300x240.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"229\" height=\"183\" srcset=\"https:\/\/agrilife.org\/casolalab\/files\/2018\/07\/Figure_3_hr-copy-300x240.jpg 300w, https:\/\/agrilife.org\/casolalab\/files\/2018\/07\/Figure_3_hr-copy-1024x818.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/agrilife.org\/casolalab\/files\/2018\/07\/Figure_3_hr-copy.jpg 1595w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 229px) 100vw, 229px\" \/>daptation and evolutionary novelties.\u00a0<\/strong>New genes evolve frequently and play a major role in phenotypic variation, adaptation and the emergence of novel traits. Our primary goals are (1) Determining the contribution of different processes, from <a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1111\/tpj.13994\">gene duplication<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/gbe\/article\/10\/11\/2906\/5140197?login=true\">de novo gene<\/a> formation, to the \u00a0evolution of new genes; and (2) Establishing the biological function of new genes.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-620 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/agrilife.org\/casolalab\/files\/2021\/01\/spb-Heath-pic-300x276.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"138\" height=\"127\" srcset=\"https:\/\/agrilife.org\/casolalab\/files\/2021\/01\/spb-Heath-pic-300x276.png 300w, https:\/\/agrilife.org\/casolalab\/files\/2021\/01\/spb-Heath-pic.png 341w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 138px) 100vw, 138px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>2. Molecular basis of convergent evolution<\/strong>. Complex phenotypes may evolve independently along multiple\u00a0lineages that experience similar selective regimes, resulting in convergent adaptations. We are currently interested in studying genetic changes underpinning convergent evolution in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biorxiv.org\/content\/10.1101\/2021.08.30.457919v1.abstract\">C4 plants<\/a> and beetles.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-533 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/agrilife.org\/casolalab\/files\/2018\/07\/Slide1-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"254\" height=\"190\" srcset=\"https:\/\/agrilife.org\/casolalab\/files\/2018\/07\/Slide1-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/agrilife.org\/casolalab\/files\/2018\/07\/Slide1.jpg 720w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 254px) 100vw, 254px\" \/>3. Genetic basis of drought resistance in loblolly pine.<\/strong>\u00a0One of our goals is to better understand the genetic basis of drought resistance in loblolly pine (<em>Pinus taeda<\/em> L.), the most widely planted forest trees in Southeastern U.S. A multi-lab effort is ongoing\u00a0 to integrate physiological measurements,\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.frontiersin.org\/articles\/10.3389\/fgene.2021.661440\/full\">gene expression information<\/a> and genotyping data to identify genetic variants associated to drought resistance in loblolly pine.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Our overarching goal is to identify genomic variation between species and populations and to determine their role in adaptation and evolutionary innovation.
