HUNTERSVILLE, N.C. — They’re baaack.\u00a0 Bats are lurking in a Charlotte high school and it’s not the first time.<\/p>\n

Students first spotted one bat in a classroom at North Mecklenburg High School before Christmas break. The building was evacuated and the problem was supposedly taken care of.\u00a0 But Monday morning before school, a staffer found another one.<\/p>\n

The N Hall is a building on campus that normally houses six classes. It\u2019s closed and quarantined after the health department removed eight bats from inside.<\/p>\n

Senior Guy McCrary admitted he\u2019s grossed out.\u00a0 Other students are, too. But they\u2019re not surprised because North Mecklenburg High is 60-years-old.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt does freak you out.\u00a0 Bats, rabbits, cockroaches, mice\u2014what\u2019s next,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey keep finding more and more.\u00a0 I don’t feel safe with my daughter back in that hall,\u201d said one student\u2019s mother, who did not want to be identified.<\/p>\n

Principal Matt Hayes says when they closed the hole the first time around, some bats were trapped inside.<\/p>\n

\u201cBy closing the hole, other bats were hiding.\u00a0 We had bats hiding.\u00a0 Now that we closed the hole they don\u2019t have an exit point,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Instead, he says there is a one-way door to flush them out.\u00a0 In addition, CMS has removed all ceiling tiles to verify there are no other holes.<\/p>\n

The problem, they say, is that bats only need a hole the size of a nickel to squeeze through.\u00a0 A private pest control company is working with CMS to get rid of the bats and students are expected to be allowed back in those classrooms on Monday.<\/p>\n

A health department spokesman says they tested one bat and it came back negative for rabies. He says they don\u2019t have to test all of the bats because no one came in contact with the others.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
