SAT/ACT testing schedule

AgriLife Logo

Preparing for college can be a bit challenging. As a volunteer or club and project managers you want your juniors and seniors to be prepared. One thing 4-H teaches young people is responsibility and leadership. These qualities can have a impact when it comes time to take the SAT or ACT for college. I felt it would be a great opportunity to provide you club leaders a schedule of testing dates and places so you could share with your club and to help them get a head of the game. I will attach the schedule in an email for you. As I come and visit your clubs I will also have a copy.

Updating your club on 4-H upcoming events

AgriLife Logo

Trying to come up with a creative way to get the word out about 4-H happenings can sometimes be a challenge. My plan is to come to your 4-H club meetings or project meetings, as time permits, to promote some of the new and other things our kids can do in 4-H. I am hoping to maybe take a small part in your meeting and talk to your club/project and have material ready for upcoming events. Some of those events could be:

  • Youth Board applicants

  • District Round-up information

  • Camps

  • Retreats

  • Community Service

  • Ect…

As events and happenings come available, I would like to contact you and see if I could come out and talk to your club. If your club has specific concerns and is in need of assistance. I would be glad to be of help to you.

Hope to be seeing some of you soon,

Debbie

Expense Reimbursement Forms

AgriLife Logo

Good Fall morning to everyone,

I love this time of year. It’s a promise that change is coming. Yeah for fall!! Ok, on to my topic. Reimbursement forms, yes, what a great way to stay organized. As your community projects, monthly meetings and many other fundraising ideas come to mind, also keep in mind when you come to hand in receipts that the Extension office will have you fill out a expense reimbursement form to keep all records straight. So, say you plan a community project with your club and you have some expense that went with it, you will need to fill out a form with all receipts for that specific event to the Extension office. Paper trails are still a very effective way of record keeping. Thank you for implementing this in your program. I will also attach the form in an email along with my blog topics.

Starr “The Trainer”

This is just proof a leader or volunteer can make a impact.

A STARR OF THE 4-H HORSE PROGRAM

Lyndi Starr is proof that it doesn’t take a high dollar horse and a professional trainer to succeed in the Texas 4-H horse program. The champion of the Stock Horse Horsemanship class at the 2014 show had never seen a horse show until four or five years ago. But a 4-H horse vaccination clinic opened her eyes to what opportunities 4-H could provide.

After walking her horse a half-mile two and from the clinic, the local 4-H leader encouraged Lyndi to become active in the 4-H horse program. That led to some riding lessons and tremendous opportunities for the Mount Vernon, Texas, teenager.

Her horse, an unregistered gelding that was the result of an accidental breeding, started out as a two-year-old futurity project. Starr trained the horse herself and showed him at the State 4-H Horse Show as a two-year-old. It was her third time to ever enter a horse show.

From there, she advanced the gelding to the three-year-old futurity program and also started attending various stock horse association shows and clinics. “We went through some rough spots, but I earned reserve in the 4-H Three-Year-Old Futurity on him. We also won the Oklahoma Stock Horse Association youth high point saddle that year.”

The next year, Starr and her gelding made the finals in Stock Horse Pleasure and Stock Horse Trail at the state show, finishing in the Top 10 in pleasure.

All of those accomplishments drew attention from collegiate stock horse teams, and Starr was recruited by North Central Texas College (NCTC). This past year, the duo received the Trainer Award at the Collegiate Stock Horse National Championships, an award presented to the highest placing individual who has trained his or her own horse.

Starr is now a sophomore at NCTC. She has continued to improve her horse and her training, and is trying to qualify for the NRCHA World Show in the Youth Limited division. Starr is a shining example of how the 4-H horse program can lead young riders through the training process to accomplish their goals.

National 4-H Science Day – Space Center Contest

The Texas 4-H Youth Development Program is excited to announce another exciting event during National 4-H Week.  This one includes an opportunity for 4-H youth and adults to visit the NASA Johnson Space Center (JSC) in Houston, Texas for a fun-filled day of educational experiences in the aerospace and rocketry project.  The Texas 4-H Program has partnered with NASA’s Summer of Innovation and the Texas A&M University Department of Geology to select up to 30 4-H members and adults to take an educational tour of Johnson Space Center on Wednesday, October 8, 2014.

This event will coincide with the 4-H National Day of Science and the 2014 science project of “Rockets to the Rescue.”  Selected participants will be led on a guided tour beginning at Space Center Houston, then toured through a variety of areas of the NASA field center.  Throughout the day the participants may have the opportunity to meet with scientists and engineers working on NASA’s major projects and/or current and former astronaut crewmembers.  The end of the experience will include the youth and adults coming together into teams to build their own “Rocket’s to the Rescue” rocket and launch from the grounds of NASA Johnson Space Center.

The contest is open to all 4-H members in grades 6th to 12th, adult volunteers, and County Extension Agents in Texas.  To apply, applicants will complete three simple questions online at:  http://texas4-h.tamu.edu/rocketessay.  Each question is limited to 300 charters and the questions are:

  • The Orion Spacecraft is a new era in space travel for the United States.   It is a part of NASA’s new space launch system will allow people to travel beyond any limits we have been before to such places as Mars.  In your opinion, why are projects such as the Orion Project important to our country and world?
  • As a 4-H member/adult in Texas and having an interest in the areas of science, technology, and/or rocketry, how do you think 4-H can play a part in the Orion Project?
  • If you were an astronaut and selected to fly on a Orion, what type of experiment would you like to conduct in space and why would you choose that particular experiment?
Rules for the contest are:
  1. Entries are now being accepted at: texas4-h.tamu.edu/rockets.
  2. All entries must be submitted online.
  3. Up to 30 youth and adults will be selected from across Texas in order to represent all geographic areas of Texas and 4-H membership.
  4. Youth and adult selected are responsible for their own travel and expenses to and from the NASA Johnson Space Center.
  5. Only those youth and adults selected can attend the NASA Johnson Space Center experiences.  Any parents, siblings, and/or spouses can visit Space Center Houston, Galveston Island, or other local venues during the time of the event.
  6. You may be required to provide a photo id for the JSC tour.
  7. Contest will close on Tuesday, September 23, 2014 at midnight.
  8. Winners will be notified via email on Friday, September 26th.
This is a great opportunity for our 4-H members to become highly engaged in the area of rocketry and aerospace, as well as an opportunity to recognize and train 4-H volunteers and agents in an exciting new project for either community clubs or SPIN 4-H Clubs.  We hope that you will join us in promoting and encouraging your 4-H members to consider this opportunity.
