But they are not. They are hybrid varieties of Bermudagrass (<em>Cynodon dactylon<\/em>).<strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Bermudagrass is a warm-season perennial grass that spreads mainly by rhizomes (underground stems) and stolons (horizontal aboveground stems).\u00a0 The grass tolerates a wide range of soil types and soil pH values, thus making it adapted to most of the southern US.<strong>\u00a0\u2018Coastal\u2019<\/strong>: A hybrid between \u2018Tift\u2019 bermudagrass, a vigorous growing bermudagrass found in an old field near Tifton, Georgia, and an introduction from South Africa.\u00a0 Coastal is a result of an extensive breeding program by Glenn Burton,<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1225\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/foragefax.tamu.edu\/?attachment_id=1225\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1225\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1225\" src=\"https:\/\/foragefax.tamu.edu\/files\/2018\/03\/DSC00227-300x225.jpg\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/foragefax.tamu.edu\/files\/2018\/03\/DSC00227-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/foragefax.tamu.edu\/files\/2018\/03\/DSC00227-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/foragefax.tamu.edu\/files\/2018\/03\/DSC00227.jpg 1024w\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Cows and calves grazing Coastal bermudagrass<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>USDA-ARS, Georgia Coastal Plains Experiment Station at Tifton, GA, and was released as a variety by that station in 1943.\u00a0 Coastal is a highly productive bermudagrass producing both rhizomes and stolons and is adapted to a wide range of climatic conditions.\u00a0 It has exceptional longevity, readily responds to fertility and irrigation, and possesses better drought tolerance than common.\u00a0 Coastal is also tolerant of heavy grazing pressure or frequent and close defoliation.\u00a0 Coastal is the most widely planted bermudagrass in Texas.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2018Tifton 85\u2019: <\/strong>Tifton 85 was developed by Dr. Glenn Burton of the USDA-ARS in cooperation with the University of Georgia Coastal Plain Experiment Station, Tifton, GA in 1991.\u00a0 Tifton 85 is a hybrid between a plant introduction from South Africa and \u2018Tifton 68\u2019.\u00a0 Tifton 85 has large stems, long stolons and a reduced number of rhizomes compared with Coastal.\u00a0 Tifton 85 can be established either by planting sprigs or vegetative tops.\u00a0 In a 3-year trial in GA, Tifton 85<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1224\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/foragefax.tamu.edu\/?attachment_id=1224\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1224\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1224\" src=\"https:\/\/foragefax.tamu.edu\/files\/2018\/03\/SpriggingBGVAC-007-300x225.jpg\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/foragefax.tamu.edu\/files\/2018\/03\/SpriggingBGVAC-007-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/foragefax.tamu.edu\/files\/2018\/03\/SpriggingBGVAC-007-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/foragefax.tamu.edu\/files\/2018\/03\/SpriggingBGVAC-007.jpg 1024w\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Tifton 85 sprigs<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>produced 26% more dry matter and was 11% more digestible than Coastal.\u00a0\u00a0 Animal gains are approximately 25% better than Coastal due to the higher digestibility.\u00a0 At Overton, Texas, Tifton 85 has remained green longer into the season than Coastal<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2018Jiggs\u2019:<\/strong>\u00a0 Jiggs is a private release of a bermudagrass found growing along the Texas Gulf Coast.\u00a0 Jiggs establishes rapidly and is generally planted using tops.\u00a0 The naturalized ecotype is productive and anecdotal evidence suggests that Jiggs may perform better on tighter soils that are poorly drained than other bermudagrass varieties.\u00a0 There is no difference in nutritive value between Jiggs and Coastal.\u00a0 Little information is available regarding Jiggs, but the variety has generated a good following where it is used.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/article>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Forage Fax &#8211; Dr. Vanessa Corriher-Olson Most people think these forages are a species of their own.
