Back in November of 2009, Texas AgriLife Extension administration in concert with AgriLife Communications announced a moratorium on new development of social media efforts. This ‘time-out’ would allow us time to develop a set of guidelines pertaining to how we, as an organization, could make best use social media tools.

After much collaboration between several people across different units and groups, reviewing existing policies and guidelines developed by various industry, educational and governmental entities, we got to work on our own. We broke it into two parts. A short, quick, one-pager that would help the new and returning user quickly reference what tips and tricks to use when setting up or using accounts. Then, some more formal, in-depth documentation for those who wanted to dig deeper.

We presented both of these at the Texas A&M AgriLife conference in January of 2010. Response seemed positive and after collecting feedback, we completed the final version of the guidelines and documentation. Then, we developed this site, to act as a place that would house parts of the guidelines requiring feedback or reporting from users and as a way for us to get the world out about the latest and greatest development in social media.

Please don’t hesitate to comment and question, ask and answer if you know of a better way to guide our AgriLife family through this ‘new’ world of social media. Thanks!
