SAN ANTONIO — The Learn and Share program’s “Curriculum for Parents and Grandparents” train-the-trainer session for improving parenting skills and supporting children’s academic success will be held on Sept. 9 and Sept. 27 in San Antonio, said program coordinators.

The Sept. 9 session will be from 8:30–11a.m. in the Education Hall of the East Central Educational Complex, 9787 New Sulphur Springs Rd.  The Sept. 27 session will be from 8:30-11 a.m. in Suite 212 of the Texas AgriLife Extension Service office in Bexar County, located in Conroy Square, 3355 Cherry Ridge Dr.

“This train-the-trainer session is for anyone interested in helping others improve their parenting skills and helping young people get the support they need to be academically successful,” said Dr. Connie Sheppard, AgriLife Extension county agent for family and consumer sciences, Bexar County.

The session will cover a number of topics and lessons, including helping with homework, summer learning, building an emotional bank account, enhancing a child’s self-esteem, finding help, preparing for a parent-teacher conference and children’s testing, Sheppard said.

“This Learn and Share curriculum is designed with sharing in mind,” Sheppard said. “It includes a visual presentation, teaching outlines, hands-on activities, handouts and more materials. Information is available in English and Spanish, and can be customized by participants for their own programs.”

Session participants are given information and are asked to share that information with others, including friends, family members and members of their community.

“We try to inspire participants to be creative in developing their own programs and sharing this information with others,” Sheppard noted. “For example, they can tap into existing school initiatives with this Learn and Share materials that address topics like Title 1, Title 3, ESL, No Child Left Behind or grand-parenting programs.”

She said those wanting to obtain and use the Learn and Share program “Curriculum for Parents and Grandparents” for their own site or venue must attend a train-the-trainer session and keep track of the  number of parents reached with these materials.

“We can also arrange a separate training at a church, school or other community site if eight or more people commit to attend the training,” she added.

The cost for the training is $15 and can be paid by mail, purchase order or at the door. Make checks out to: Family Alliance Council.
