The fetal hybrid specimen was collected from the wild swine population on the Savannah River Site, near Aiken South Carolina. The feral piglet (USNM 47786) was collected by C. Hart Merriam on Roan Mountain, North Carolina, in 1892, twenty years before any wild boar were known to have been introduced into that area of the southeastern United States.
