Cotton Varieties Information Sheet for West Central Texas

This report reflects information collected from 165 cotton variety demonstrations conducted in West Central Texas from 1989 to 2000. The result demonstration tests were established by producers in cooperation with county Extension personnel. In the last twelve years, 214 varieties have been tested. The lint yield reported is an adjusted average to reduce the variation between plots and years. The fiber characteristics reported is the average across all plots with fiber quality being determined by HVI (high volume instrument) classing equipment.

This information should be helpful to producers in selecting a variety from the numerous ones available. Producers are strongly encouraged to plant no more than 5 to 10 acres of a variety that they have not grown before to make sure it works in their normal management practices for the crop. The varieties that are not reported in the recommended cotton variety planting lists, that have been tested, are printed on the last page with an explanation as to why they are not included.

Testing of varieties is an endless process with more varieties becoming available each year than are being eliminated by the testing program. Due to the rapid adoption of transgenic cottons and the need to keep producers informed, the following list was developed to reflect as much yield and fiber quality information as possible about each tested variety. To be included in this report a variety had to be in at least five tests.

Definitions

Adjusted Average – To determine how varieties will perform from year to year across counties a method of averaging yields was developed. A variety was selected that was planted in a number of tests and the average yield was determined. The difference from that average was then subtracted or added to all varieties in the test. This adjusted yield was then used to determine the performance of each variety.

This method of adjusting yields became difficult to use as varieties have changed. This document serves more as a historical reference for varieties that were planted in the 1989 to 2000 time frame. New varieties are being tested and that data is going into a data base that can be referenced by producers that have an internet connection.

Staple– fiber length of the cotton lint, usually marketed by 32nds of an inch.

Mic – is a term used to refer to micronaire which is the weight of fiber in micrograms per inch.

Strength – is a measure of force needed to rupture and break a fiber bundle.

Determinacy – is related to regrowth ability and is closely related to earliness.

Determinate – refers to cotton varieties that generally set fruit early and then “cut-out” (basically limit plant growth and flowering).

Moderately – in regards to determinacy, is used to express a level between that of determinate and indeterminate.

Indeterminate – refers to cotton varieties that continue to grow and flower throughout the summer, these varieties handle moisture stress better for a longer period of time than determinate varieties.

Varieties are not listed or removed from the list for three reasons.

These include:
1) sale of the variety was discontinued by the seed company;
2) the variety has not been tested sufficiently to be reported in this particular summary, but promising varieties will be studied further and reported in future information sheets; and
3) the variety did not meet at least one of the yield or quality standards.

The following varieties were dropped because they did not meet the yield and fiber quality standards.

Yield and fiber quality standards used were:

  1. adjusted average lint yield had to be more than 400 pounds per acre
  2. average fiber length (staple) of one inch or more (32/32nds)
  3. Micronaire average in the premium range of 3.5 to 4.9; and
  4. strength lower than indicated for maturity group.
