Greenhouse and nursery production of ornamental plants is one of the largest segments of Texas agriculture with annual sales exceeding one billion dollars. Ornamental plants are important for increasing the quality of life and also for improving the environment. Ornamentals are used for landscaping and are widely distributed in urban and suburban environments such as gardens, home and office interiors, public parks, athletic fields, and roadside rights-of-way. However, most ornamental cultivars possess multiple desirable horticultural traits with broad adaptation to highly variable environments.
Texas A&M AgriLife Research ornamental research topics include genetics, landscaping, water resources, breeding and economics and marketing.
