Dr. Patil, Associate Professor and Director of the Vegetable and Fruit Improvement Center, has been actively involved in both research and educational activities related to global level ‘Foods for Health’. His research is focused on pre and postharvest effects on bioactive compounds in citrus, onion and, more recently, other vegetables and fruits. His research, in collaboration with trans-disciplinary scientists, related bioactive-derived assays which led to isolation and characterization of certain bioactives which seems to have potential in preventing certain types of cancer and osteoporosis based on cell and animal studies. He has published extensively in scientific papers in peer-reviewed journals, editor reviewed proceedings, book chapters, edited a book. Patil received 15 awards including the young scientist award by the American Chemical Society, outstanding research and teaching award, and the state highest Award, Rajothsava, by the Karnataka Government in 2005. In 2009, three professional societies (American Chemical Society, American Society for Horticultural Sciences, Texas AgriLife) recognized Patil as Fellow. In 2010, he also received, Vice Chancellor Award in Excellence. He has been interviewed and/or his work has been published in 135 consumer-friendly articles, news media including the Associated Press, Reuters, the Wall Street Journal, Fox Health Channel, CNN. He gave more than 120 invited presentations in the land grant institutions, professional societies, industry, learned society organizations. He has chaired or co-chaired 25 symposia including the Human Health Effects of Fruit and Vegetables (FAVHealth) in 2005 and 2007, as well as “Potential Citrus health Benefits” in 2004. He has also served as chair of the Division of Agricultural and food Chemistry of the American Chemical Society and this division celebrated centennial anniversary during his leadership.
