Dr. Amy Swinford received her DVM from the University Of Illinois College Of Veterinary Medicine and obtained her MS degree there in the Department of Veterinary Pathobiology. She became a board-certified microbiologist in the American College of Veterinary Microbiologists in 1997.

Dr. Swinford has enjoyed a diversity of positions in her career as a veterinary microbiologist. She first worked as a diagnostic virologist at the University of Nebraska Veterinary Diagnostic Center in Lincoln, Nebraska. She subsequently worked on vaccine and antimicrobial research and development with two biopharmaceutical companies. During this time, Dr. Swinford also served as a Public Health Officer in the United States Air Force Reserve.

In 2005, Dr. Swinford joined the Texas A&M Veterinary Medical Diagnostic Laboratory (TVMDL) as Section Head of the Bacteriology/Mycology laboratory. In this capacity she serves as a veterinary diagnostician, works on collaborative research projects, and is an adjunct Assistant Professor in the College of Veterinary Medicine at Texas A&M University. She also assists in training of foreign scientists that visit TVMDL via scholarship programs through the Foreign Animal and Zoonotic Disease Center and the Borlaug Institute.

Dr. Swinford was awarded the TVMDL Director’s Excellence Award in 2010 and the Texas A&M Vice Chancellor’s Award in Excellence in 2011. She was promoted to the Microbiology Branch Chief in 2012, with oversight of the Bacteriology, Serology, Virology, and Molecular Diagnostics sections. Dr. Swinford is active in the American Association of Veterinary Laboratory Diagnosticians, serving on the Bacteriology/Mycology, Membership, and Accreditation Committees.
