Danforth “I Dare You” Award

Recognizing young leaders

There are many young people who have demonstrated unusual integrity, balanced personal development,  and a willingness to assume responsibility. They may hold elected positions or they may be young people  hose leadership qualities have not yet been fully appreciated by their peers. The nationally know “I DareYou” Leadership Award provides a vehicle for Principals, Headmasters, and 4-H County Agents to recognize the achievements and the promise of these aspiring leaders.

The I dare you leadership award

The I Dare You Award was first offered in 1941 by businessman and philanthropist, William H. Danforth,  who dared young people to achieve their highest potential and to influence others through lives of service. The founder of the Ralston Purina Company and a successful entrepreneur and civic leader, Mr. Danforth believed that a balanced four-fold life of mental, physical, social, and spiritual development sustained individuals for the demands of leadership! Among other civic achievements Mr. Danforth helped establish the American Youth Foundation a non-sectarian, not-for-profit organization committed to the service of  youth through summer camps and leadership conferences.  Each year the American Youth Foundation offers every secondary school in the United States the opportunity to select two students for recognition as recipients of the I Dare You Leadership Award. In addition, the Award is offered through every county 4-H agent in the U.S. Approximately 6,000 schools and counties participate every year.

The Award

The Award consists of a personalized Certificate of Recognition and a copy of I Dare You, Mr. Danforth’s classic book on personal motivation.
