Every month, garden bloggers across the blogosphere post what’s blooming in their gardens, thanks to the May Dreams Gardens blog who started this thing. Here in Northeast Texas, we haven’t had a killing freeze, and only once a very light frost in a few of the low lying areas, so things are still looking pretty good.
Here are a few of the flowers in my own garden, and our Master Gardener demonstration gardens in the Tyler Rose Garden, that are still strutting their stuff. Rain is predicted later today (yeah!!)
- Another Justicia blooming in my garden – I really like this color combination!
- A white sasanqua camellia (name unknown) blooming in the Camellia Garden in the Tyler Rose Garden.
- Closer shot of Dahlia ‘Single Party’. During the summer, the flowers have a more golden tone, but when it cools off in the fall, they turn buttery yellow.
- Dahlia ‘Single Party’ is on of my favorite perennials. The color of its dark foliage holds throughout our blistering hot Texas summers, it doesn’t mind the sun, and blooms almost constantly!
- Mexican Bush Sage (Salvia leucantha) is a great and reliable fall bloomer. I love the soft appearance of the purple and white flowers on the long inflorescences.
- Great color on a Salvia greggii in the IDEA Gaden
- A Justicia brandegeeana (Shrimp Plant) blooming up a storm in my garden
- A cool variegated Tricytris (Toad Lily) I picked up a at a great nursery in Indianapolis during the 2011 GWA meeting.
- White ginger (Hedychium coronarium) – one of the other plants I can smell from a distance.
- Almond verbena is a great fall bloomer and is strongly perfumed – one of the few plants I can smell from several feet away.
- Almond Verbena and a great purple hairstreak
- ‘Old Blush’ rose can be counted on to bloom nearly 12 months out of the year.
- Geranium in a painted wind turbine roof vent (upside down)
- Texas Superstar ‘Belinda’s Dream’ rose with the biggest bloom on it that I can remember! In IDEA Garden
