What a long, productive week thus far!! I just arrived home from Houston and I am sure glad I was able to attend the rodeo with the CYFAR students from Mickey LeLand and Cristo Rey. It was great to have seen Rocio and her daughter and the Harris County Extension team!!
Roughly 30 students from both schools attended this event during their Spring Break. Fralonda did a great job with providing the high school students with the liberty to work in teams and explore the AGventure section so the students could complete their scavenger hunt list! Not only did the students learn about agriculture, but also, learned to work in teams and be responsible.
I thought San Antonio Live Stock Show and Rodeo was HUGE….Houston’s rodeo appeared much larger in scale! I have never seen so many goats and sheep in one place!!! It was great to see our students observe the 4-H and FFA students take their respected animals and prepare for the show that they have worked so hard on to showcase at the rodeo. I believe our CYFAR 4-H students were inquisitive as to how they can compete for next year’s rodeo as they realized that the students compete for scholarship prize money. Sometimes, all it takes is “observation” to convince others the rewards of caring for an animal and competing at a rodeo. There are many benefits to raising an animal, that also prepares the students for life after high school.
Once lunch was served, a speaker addressed several students about the importance of agriculture, bee pollination, and the dwindling numbers of agriculture growers in Texas, the students were able to explore the carnival, and rodeo food. Today was truly a SUCCESS!! Thanks to Fralonda and her Harris County Extension for a great day with the CYFAR 4-Her’s from Cristo Rey and Mickey LeLand.
