Charlotte Wehrman
4-H CAPITAL Program Director
Travis County Extension Agent of Urban Youth Development
Charlotte began her love affair with 4-H CAPITAL as an AmeriCorps Member in August of 2006 and has been hooked ever since. Whether as an AmeriCorps Member, a Temporary Staff, an AmeriCorps Coordinator, the AmeriCorps Project Manager or now as the Program Director she brings a passion for service and innovation to her work every day.  Now in the 4-H CAPITAL’s highest leadership position she engages in long-term planning, grant writing and programmatic design in partnership with CAPITAL staff, Travis County AgriLife Extension and their community partners. She received her bachelors in Theater Studies from the University of Texas in the summer of 2005 and she completed her Masters of Science in Organizational Leadership and Ethics at Saint Edward’s University in August of 2013. She is excited and honored to lead 4-H CAPITAL into its next stage of development.
BarbaraLundquist Barbara Lundquist
Office Specialist

From 2010-2012, Barbara served with AmeriCorps as a 4-H CAPITAL Instructor. In July 2013 Barbara returned as a permanent staff member responsible for purchasing and distributing materials for 4-H classes and camps. Barbara graduated from Southwestern University with a BA in Art History and is an alum of APO, a national service organization. Barbara’s background and her experiences with AmeriCorps and 4-H have given her a great love of alternative education, and she hopes to spend her future providing opportunities for people to explore their interests and develop a passion for lifelong learning.

Administration and Finance Coordinator

Annabel Almeida has been with Travis County for 8 years. She is very passionate about working with youth and families to provide services for a better living. In December 2015 joined 4-H Capital as the Administration and Finance Coordinator where she is responsible for budget keeping.

2015-willie-garza Willie Garza
AmeriCorps Project Manager
After earning a B.A. in Psychology from the University of Texas, Willie joined 4-H CAPITAL in 2005 as an AmeriCorps member. In 2010, Willie took a position with the Del Valle Independent School District, creating a new after school program for Ojeda Middle School. As an administrator of this new program his time in the classroom was limited and he missed teaching students. In the summer of 2013 Willie rejoined the 4-H CAPITAL Program as the STEM coordinator where he developed new STEM Curriculum and supported after school classes. In 2015, Willie became the AmeriCorps Project Manager working closely with the Program Director, AmeriCorps Members, and staff to ensure program quality and grant compliance.

AmeriCorps Project Coordinator
Casey graduated from Allegheny College in 2013, with a dual degree in Psychology and Environmental Studies. After working a year at home in the YMCA afterschool program, he decided to dedicate a year of his life to service and explore outside of Warren, Pennsylvania. In 2014, he served as a literacy tutor with PAVE AmeriCorps in Eldon, Missouri, and helped with afterschool programming. He really enjoyed his experiences with the LEAP afterschool program in Missouri and decided to join 4-H CAPITAL in order to delve further into afterschool life. In July, he joined the 4-H CAPITAL staff as the AmeriCorps Project Coordinator, supporting members as they complete their terms of service.

MellanieMickelson Mellanie Mickelson
Animal Science Coordinator

Mellanie joined the 4-H CAPITAL Team in August, 2011 after moving to Austin, TX from Stillwater, OK. She is a graduate from the Oklahoma State University Animal Science program with a degree in Animal Science and a specialty in veterinary medicine. Having spent over 7 years in the veterinary field, working with various zoos and several 4-H programs, Mellanie’s current responsibilities include coordinating and developing curriculum for the Animal Science Team, facilitating animal science courses for urban youth, and maintaining the health of our goat herds throughout the city.

Animal Science Specialist
Chloe started with 4-H Capital in the spring of 2016 as an AmeriCorps member and joined the staff as the Animal Science Specialist in July of 2016. She has worked with livestock for the last ten years while working with youth to teach them about the agricultural industry. Chloe started her degree in Biology but switched her major recently to Business and will graduate in May of 2017. She mostly grew up in Florida and moved here to Austin for the AmeriCorps position.

Youth Gardening Specialist

Meredith graduated from UT Austin with a degree in Zoology and a strong course base in photojournalism. She worked as an editor of educational materials for many years but longed to reconnect more directly with her love of science and nature. After leaving the publishing industry, she discovered a passion for teaching children and adults about environmental stewardship, the benefits of organic gardening and growing native plants, and creating habitats. Meredith believes that time spent outdoors is key to improving youth’s emotional and physical health, their creativity and love of learning, their academic success in multiple curricula, and their understanding and appreciation of Earth’s natural resources. In 2013 Meredith joined 4-H CAPITAL as the team’s Youth Gardening Specialist, where she further enjoys helping kids, gardens, and wildlife flourish.

STEM Specialist

Emily grew up in Davis, California exploring the museums, science centers, and campgrounds of the Golden State. After studying Sociology at the University of California Davis, she worked as an educator supporting students with special needs. In 2006, Emily moved to Austin and started working as a summer camp and afterschool program educator for the Austin Children’s Museum. Emily coordinated the museum’s technology education programs and managed the Innovator’s Workshop exhibit at the Thinkery. In 2016 Emily joined 4-H CAPITAL as the STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) Instructional Specialist. Emily is passionate about building a community that encourages lifelong learning. You might catch Emily driving around Austin in her Star Wars themed vehicle, CAR2D2.
Heather Russon  Heather Russon
Natural Resources Specialist

Originally from Michigan, Heather earned a B.A. in Biology from Kalamazoo College before moving to Austin. After serving 2 years as an AmeriCorps member for 4-H CAPITAL, Heather became a permanent staff member as the Natural Resources Specialist in July 2014. Her duties include curriculum development as well as training and supporting AmeriCorps members.

Catherine Swan
Instructional Specialist

Catherine joined 4-H CAPITAL in 2007. With a background in behavior management while working in the Texas Prison system, Catherine recognized the need for intervention to start early in a person’s life. It was that realization that brought her to the 4-H CAPITAL program. During her time in the program she has seen angry and uninspired students slowly learn to trust and care through grooming goats, planting seeds, and becoming young hands-on scientists. Since her arrival she has developed curriculum in Electronics, Aerospace, Junior Master Gardening, Animal Science, and Photography.
Michael Thielvoldt
Instructional Specialist

After earning a B.A. in Communication Studies and Film & Electronic Arts from California State University Long Beach, Michael returned to his home state of Texas to continue his education at the University of Texas at Austin. In 2010, he completed his M.A. in Media Studies and began teaching film and media courses at Austin Community College. He joined 4-H CAPITAL in September of 2011 where he began teaching courses in a variety of subject areas, including the Physical Sciences, Food Sciences, Engineering, Gardening, and Video Production. Currently, Michael focuses on curriculum development, grant resourcing, community outreach, and recruitment and supplements the administrative work with mentor-based instruction via 4-H’s Tech Wizards program.
ChrisFord Chris Ford
Instructional Specialist

Long before he earned a B.A. in Psychology from the University of Texas, Chris was having fun working with youth and fascinated by science and technology. After many years as a summer camp counselor, outdoor educator, peer-mediation trainer, and industrial design hobbyist he went back to school and received a Masters of Science degree in Industrial Technology from Texas State University. He started his own business as a handy-man and design consultant and soon found himself also working as a part-time 3-D Printing and Wood-Shop instructor at TechShop. Having joined 4-H CAPITAL in August 2013, Chris now has the amazing opportunity to share his broad expertise with the youth of Travis County teaching them STEM fundamentals as they complete projects of their own design.

Program Assistant – Tech Wizards, Texas 4-H Military
Tyger is a proud native of New Mexico where she studied History at Western New Mexico University in her hometown of Silver City. In 2012 Tyger joined AmeriCorps NCCC, the National Civilian Community Corps in Baltimore, MD, where she devoted 10 months of full time service to strengthening communities within the United States. She has volunteered countless hours for many non-profit organizations throughout the country but her favorites are Charity Treks, Blue Water Baltimore and the American Red Cross. Tyger came to Austin in August of 2015 as a member with 4-H CAPITAL AmeriCorps and is now a staff member and in charge of TechWizards, an afterschool program devoted to teaching STEAM and mentoring youth. Tyger is a very firm believer in selfless service and community engagement and hopes to continue serving others by one day joining the Peace Corps.

Our AmeriCorps Members
Our AmeriCorps members are a vital part of the 4-H CAPITAL family. AmeriCorps members come from across the country and use their diverse experiences to empower Austin’s youth. Members work as afterschool instructors in the AISD and DVISD school systems, bringing project-based hands-on science activities to 2,000 students annually.
