The PEDV IFA allows TVMDL diagnosticians to detect antibodies to the virus using a minimum of 0.5 – 1.00cc serum. The test cost is $8 in state and $9.60 for out-of-state testing, and the test is now available to order through the Amarillo lab. Visit tvmdl.tamu.edu for more information.
Although it is endemic in many countries, the virus was only recently identified in the United States in May 2013. According to the National Pork Board, the virus has killed between 1 and 4 million pigs in the U.S. and has spread to more than 20 states across the country. The virus, spread by fecal matter, can be transmitted by pigs as well as by inanimate objects such as boots, clothing and trucks. The test, developed at TVMDL, provides a much-needed service to the swine industry as they work to protect their herds from the virus. With the integration of this test, the laboratory can stay at the forefront of emerging disease detection.
